There’s something irresistible about a Highland cow. Beneath that great sweep of horns and tousled fringe is such a gentle, watchful face, and I wanted this painting to feel like a portrait of an individual.
I loved working the light through all that shaggy hair, picking out strands of gold and warm brown against the dark, moody sky. The contrast gives this beautiful animal a wonderous presence that seems to fill the canvas.
