A zebra isn’t part of my usual collection, but I couldn’t resist painting this portrait. I was drawn to the way its stripes change with every turn of the face: bright white in the light, then soft grey and deep blue in the shadows.
The sunlight catching the mane was my favourite part to paint. Those warm, glowing edges bring the whole animal forward against the quiet brown background, while its steady gaze gives the painting a character all its own.
