Yellow-tailed black cockatoos often pass over our property between the pine plantations, stopping to feed on the banksia seeds. You usually hear them coming. I wouldn’t call it birdsong exactly; it’s more of a screech, and I love knowing they’re nearby.
For this painting, I leaned into the colour hiding in those dark feathers. I pushed the highlights towards a vivid, almost surreal blue, then picked out the little yellow flecks that I find so beautiful. The simple background lets this magnificent bird hold all the attention.
