I wanted this cockatoo to be full of life. I spent time on the tiny feathers around its head, the bright eye and the curves and highlights of that powerful beak. Then I let myself go in the background.
I used a palette knife to drag vivid colour across the canvas, building a world that’s far from realistic. That contrast is what I love: a detailed bird against a gloriously wild background. It’s the sort of painting I made to cheer up a room.
