Sunflowers & Vegetables

When I planted this Potager garden, I really wanted to allow myself some room and time for flowers. Coming here was a new chapter in my life and I had managed to over fill my last chapter so much that I didn’t have time or energy for the things that are done just because and not out of necessity.

So I planted Cornflowers, Sunflowers, Lupins, Snapdragons, Queen Anne’s Lace, Foxgloves, Delphiniums, Dahlias, frivolous things……..or so I thought!

It became clear to me one spring day as I was sitting out in the garden contemplating my next move that I’ve never ever planted a garden where every Pumpkin, Zucchini, Cucumber and Squash was pollinated. Sometimes the female flower remains unpollinated and shrivels up and drops off, but I was noticing a very different scenario here. Everything that required bee pollination was being thoroughly pollinated. The Apples were abundant and there were literally 40 Jap Pumpkins on one plant.

I knew having flowers was supposed to help with bee pollinating things, but I had no idea it was going to be this successful.

Add the this the bonus of the gorgeous flowers I could bring inside because there were so many of them as I adore bunches of flowers around the home.

The thing I didn’t count on was how the wild and bright colours would be a beacon, calling me to be out near them. Which means I spend more time in the garden being surrounded by flowers and growing delicious food. I don’t know that it gets much better that! xx Cindy
